Effect of Topical Antibiotics on Duration of Acute Infective Conjunctivitis in Children is an article published in the Jama Network Open in October 2022. This was a randomized clinical trial conducted in Finland. The 88 participants were aged 6 months to 7 years old with a diagnosis of acute conjunctivitis, and were followed up for 14 days. They were prescribed moxifloxacin eye drops, placebo eye drops, or no interventions. The primary outcome was time to clinical cure in days. The secondary outcomes were relapse of conjunctivitis within 14 days.

In this article, it was found that moxifloxacin eye drops significantly shortened the duration of illness in comparison to the no intervention group, with a p value of 0.04. In comparison to the placebo eye drops, it only demonstrated a significant reduction in the symptoms of conjunctivitis on day 3 to 6, no difference in time to cure. The symptoms were presence of erythema on the conjunctiva, discharge, or soreness and swelling of the eyelids. Similarly, when comparing the children who received placebo versus on intervention, there was no difference in the time to clinical cure. Therefore, it was concluded that topical antibiotics are beneficial in the treatment of acute bacterial conjunctivitis. Additionally, lubricating eye drops may have some benefit in managing acute bacterial conjunctivitis in children.
