Self Reflection

My psychiatry rotation was at the Psychiatry ER at Queens Hospital Center. Most of the patients are brought in for stabilization of acute psychiatric symptomatology. I noticed that their disposition is usually established after the initial interaction and once collateral information is provided. It was interesting to see how verbal de-escalation is effective for certain patients, but it is good to remain apprehensive and medicate when necessary. This is a rotation where I saw how important patient and provider safety is in order to create a functional and productive environment. Additionally, it was nice to work with providers who are compassionate and genuinely concerned about their patients’ mental health. I found it difficult to speak to patients about sensitive topics such as suicide attempts. It is hard to ask follow up questions as it can be tough for patients to talk about. I also found it hard to stay focused in my conversation with one patient when you are told to be hyper aware of your surroundings due to other patients wandering. However, I learned a lot about psychiatric conditions and the proper plan of care, as well as strong indications for admission. I hope to use some of these skills on my next rotation – Surgery at St. Francis Hospital.
